More than five hours after making an initial statement on the outage services still hadn’t been restored after 3pm on Monday, with some customers growing increasingly irritated online.
The issue was affecting Westpac customers who on Monday morning weren’t able to access funds, with some saying they couldn’t pay bills or buy lunch for themselves or their children, or access their cars after having them serviced.
Westpac said in a statement they were experiencing “issues with Westpac Live Online and Mobile Banking” and were working to fix the issues in a statement after 10am. Customers from the bank noticed the issue this morning, with numerous users saying they’d been left stranded without any accessible cash in their account.
“ITS STILL DOWN!!!! I have two Afterpay bills that are charging me $10 each for two payments if I don’t pay today, and I need to access accounts to transfer money to do the two payments,” one customer wrote on Facebook. “I have been trying since 9am AEST and it’s now 1.56pm and I still get the same error with Westpac online banking!! Not happy Westpac! Costing me money, literally!”
“Damn, I need to get out of the habit of only transferring as much as I need for the day to my debit card,” one man said on Twitter. “Now I can’t buy even my lunch today.”
Another woman found herself in a similar position.
“Currently out and have to pay for parking in a few hours and need to transfer funds over. Didn’t get a chance this morning. Hope it’s up in the next few hours or I’ll be stuck here,” she said.

( подробнее )Whether it’s for an unexpected loss of a job, bill shock, car accident or medical emergency, having a financial buffer in place is becoming more important than ever.
But how much do you need, exactly?
Experts typically recommend starting out by doing a detailed budget – if you haven’t done one, now is as good a time as any – to calculate all of your expenses.
Then, multiply that by three, six or even 12 months’ worth.
If that’s not possible right away, others say you should try to put away a bare minimum – two American experts last year gave a highly specific number of $US2467.

“I’m not a fan of one-size-fits-all approaches to savings and spending,” said personal finance expert Melissa Browne from The Money Barre, author of Budgets Don’t Work (but this does).
“I believe there is too much of that in the financial advice world and it can make some of us feel artificially safe.”
Instead, according to Browne, a good rule of thumb is three months’ worth of fixed expenses.
“Things such as rent or mortgage, council rates, loan repayments, internet, phone and other subscriptions, school fees and insurance,” she said.
“The buffer doesn’t need to be inflated for discretionary spending as long as we have a buffer of our needs.”
Browne suggests an easy way to save for your buffer quickly is to lodge your 2020 tax return and “pop the entire refund away towards it”.

AMP says it’s crucial to set a realistic target so it doesn’t seem overwhelming – and to get started as soon as possible.
“Having something in your emergency fund, even a few hundred dollars, is better than nothing,” the bank says in its guide.
Once you’ve set a goal and made a start, remember that an emergency fund won’t build itself up.
“Saving for your emergency fund should take into account your income and savings goals, and then look at all the ways you can cut back on your expenses,” AMP says.
“This is where you need to be ruthless, slashing unnecessary spending – your wants, as opposed to your needs.”
For example, if your goal is to save $2000 in six months, that works out to about $11 a day.
“Go through your spreadsheet of expenses and look at all the areas that can be tightened or eliminated completely to make this goal achievable,” AMP says.

ASIC’s MoneySmart adds that setting up a separate savings account is a good idea as it will discourage you from dipping into the fund.
If you have a mortgage, you should use your offset account – which reduces the amount of interest you pay on your home loan – as your emergency fund to get more bang for your buck.
But when should you actually use your emergency fund?
“Keep your emergency fund for expenses you need to pay quickly when other money isn’t available,” MoneySmart says.
“If it can wait, save up for a few weeks and pay it from this saved money instead.”
National accounts data released Wednesday confirmed Australia’s decades-long run of prosperity has finally come to an end, with the nation entering an official recession for the first time since the 1990s.
The economy contracted 7 per cent through the quarter, marking the worst fall since records began in 1959.

( подробнее )Wealthy families on six figure salaries are on track to secure huge windfalls worth up to 20 times the value of low income and part-time workers under the legislated tax cuts by 2025.
That prompted a warning that the Morrison Government would be better off increasing welfare payments or tax cuts for low income workers if they really want people out spending to stimulate the economy.

RELATED: How to survive a recession
ANU Associate Professor Ben Phillips told news.com.au that the rich are more likely to stash tax cuts into savings accounts and pay off personal debts including credit cards and big mortgages, rather than spending the money and stimulating the economy.
“We know that people are saving at higher rates than ever. It will have some small impact. But most people would say you get a bigger bang for your buck with tax cuts at the lower income end or welfare,’’ he said.
The Australian Council for Social Services is urging the Morrison Government to deliver a permanent increase to JobSeeker before it fast-tracks tax cuts for the rich.
In a discussion paper, Restoring growth: Tax cuts or payments and services?, ACOSS warns bringing forward the tax cuts won’t stimulate the economy if the wealthy workers don’t spend the money.
“The second and third stages of the Government’s proposed tax cuts are skewed towards high income-earners. In the context of high household debt, much of these tax cuts will be saved,’’ the discussion paper states.
Wealthy Australians - including Prime Minister Scott Morrison - will be more than $11,000 better off under the proposed tax cuts.
“In contrast, a $75 a week increase in Newstart and related allowances for single people and single parents would mainly go to the poorest households and regions. Since they have little choice but to spend any extra dollar on essentials like food and rent, the money would be quickly spent, lifting jobs and growth in the regions that need it.”
The tax cuts the Morrison Government is considering bringing forward are worth $20 billion and are currently scheduled to come into force in 2022.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has repeatedly flagged he is considering bringing forward the tax cuts to help kickstart the economy.
“Again, we’ll provide those details when we get to the Budget, because obviously these are issues that are still under consideration and what we did take to the last election was a three-stage plan which would see the abolition of a whole tax bracket, 37 cents in the dollar tax bracket,’’’ he said.
“It would see 94 per cent of Australian taxpayers pay a marginal rate of no more than 30 cents in the dollar. One big tax bracket between $45,000 and $200,000. It’s important that people recognise that tax cuts put more money into people’s pockets. More money into people’s pockets means more spending and more spending means more jobs. But these are still under consideration, so I don’t want to add to the detailed speculation, you’ll have to wait until Budget day.”

The second stage of the tax cuts the Morrison Government has flagged it is most likely to bring forward will lift the income threshold when the 19 per cent tax rate kicks in from $41,000 to $45,000 and the rate at which the 32.5 per cent tax rate applies from $90,000 to $120,000.
A third stage of the tax cuts, with a tax rate of 32.5 per cent to apply to the vast majority of workers, is currently scheduled from 2024.
It will apply a 32.5 per cent tax rate on all income between $41,000 and $200,000.
That’s the tax change that will ultimately deliver the Prime Minister a $11,640 a year tax cut.
By comparison, a part-time worker earning $30,000 a year will secure just $255-a-year from the planned tax cuts.
A worker earning $75,000-a-year secured a $1080 a year tax cut under the original 2019 tax cuts rising to $1830 by 2025.
But the biggest benefits of the tax cuts kick in when workers are earning six figures.
While the tax cuts are worth up to $2565 for anyone earning over $120,000 from 2023 the windfall gains for high income earners keeps rising.
By 2025, or earlier if the tax cuts are brought forward, the tax cuts will deliver $4400 for a worker on $120,000 a year.
It’s low income workers who have not only borne the brunt of the COVID-19 recession but also delivered some of the biggest stimulus to the economy by raiding their super accounts to pay for general living expenses and purchases after they were stood down and laid off.
Labor’s treasury spokesman Jim Chalmers said the ALP would be “constructive” but wouldn’t sign on to proposals the Morrison Government had not even confirmed.
“Because the Government hasn’t announced that. They haven’t said that that’s exactly what they’re going to do,’’ he said.
“They’ve hinted that they might change some of the existing tax scales and thresholds and rates. I think it’s entirely responsible for us not to sign up to something that we haven’t seen. There’s not a blank cheque here. We’ll be responsible, we’ll be constructive, we’ll engage with any concrete proposals. But it doesn’t make a lot of sense for us to sign up for something when the Government still doesn’t even know what they’re going to do.”

But she explained that despite the “undeniable success” of the measure, her organisation was predicting a 27 per cent fall in homebuilding activity for 2020/21 compared to the previous year.
“This will be calamitous for many of the nearly 370,000 home building businesses that are vital to local economies and communities throughout Australia unless the Government steps in with (an) extension of HomeBuilder and other stimulus measures,” Ms Wawn said.
She said a hypothetical HomeBuilder 2.0 would require a $1.3 billion investment but would “return a boost to GDP of up to $4.5 billion, create more than 4500 additional new jobs and result in the construction of more than 6000 new homes”.
NSW builder Nathan Chamings, who lives and works in the Albury-Wodonga region on the Victorian border, is one of countless business owners to have been hit by the economic fallout of COVID-19, finding himself out of pocket by thousands of dollars since the pandemic began.
However, he told news.com.au the HomeBuilder and JobKeeper schemes had sparked a boom in his area at least.
“In this region it is probably the busiest it has been in a long time, because there’s that sense of reassurance with that $25,000 grant. Inquiries for new home builds have gone through the roof,” he said.
“In the Albury-Wodonga region, people were hesitant to sign a contract in March, but now if they’ve got that grant, they are happy to move forward and make the most of it.
“I’m not talking about developers building multiple homes, it’s more first homebuyers and people like that who have still got a secure job and are keen to get into a new house.”
He said when the pandemic first hit, sales declined as locals were “scared” about how the economy and job market would be affected, but that there had been a noticeable difference made by the introduction of HomeBuilder and other stimulus measures such as JobKeeper.
However, he said the uncertainty posed by the Victorian border lockdown had impacted his business a “fair bit”.

“We live in NSW and the company is based in NSW but we do a lot of work in Victoria so it slowed everything down including deliveries and it made it harder to get people (including the owners) through to the site,” he said.
Mr Chamings, who has three employees, said it had also been difficult to arrange paperwork for permits to allow them to cross between the borders, although the pain had been lessened through the use of the new WorkApp platform which was originally created to help tradies hire casual workers in their vicinity.
“I can see the benefits for when we have work outside Albury-Wodonga where we don’t have as many contacts – you can jump on the app and look for tradies or labourers or whoever you need which makes it easier to manage projects,” he said, adding it was especially helpful during COVID-19 as it allowed workers to be hired for small jobs without face-to-face contact.
WorkApp CEO and founder Shane Wallace said it had taken off during the pandemic as it cut out the “expensive middle man” just as fewer businesses were able to absorb the costs of job ads or commissions on sales.
“COVID has led to the biggest number of WorkApp downloads, 3000 in a day with nearly 200,000 people using the app,” he said.
“Month on month we’re seeing the numbers double.
“The digital landscape continues to change the way we do almost everything, and it’s these platforms people turn to in turbulent times.”

“We know some customers in Victoria will be disappointed by the delayed roll out, but the safety and wellbeing of our customers, team members, and community remains our number one priority. The delay will allow our team to focus on operations and supplying customers with their everyday essentials during this challenging period. Once restrictions ease and we can safely roll out the program, we look forward to sharing the Disney magic with our Victorian customers.”
Woolworths has also renewed its partnership with TerraCycle, allowing customers to drop any preloved Ooshies in store to be turned into plastic pellets. The pellets are used to help make outdoor products such as garden beds, decks, fences and benches, and the bag the Ooshies come in can be recycled via kerbside yellow bins.
A full list of the Disney+ Ooshies will be revealed closer to the launch date.

“During the pandemic, the QAnon movement appears to be gaining a lot of followers. Can you talk about what you think about that, and what you have to say to people who are following this movement right now?” Pettypiece asked.
“Well I don’t know much about the movement, other than I understand they like me very much. Which I appreciate,” Mr Trump replied.
“But I don’t know much about the movement. I have heard that it is gaining in popularity, and from what I hear, these are people that – when they watch the streets of Portland … these are people that don’t like what’s going on in places like Portland, in places like Chicago, and New York, and other cities.
“And I’ve heard these are people that love our country. And they just don’t like seeing it. So I don’t know, really, anything about it, other than they do supposedly like me.
“And they also would like to see problems in these areas – like, especially the areas that we’re talking about – go away. Because there’s no reason the Democrats can’t run a city.”

Pettypiece followed up, giving Mr Trump a brief rundown of the kooky stuff QAnon believes.
“The crux of the theory is this belief that you are secretly saving the world from this Satanic cult of paedophiles and cannibals. Does that sound like something you are behind?” she asked.
“Well, I haven’t heard that. But is that supposed to be a bad thing, or a good thing? You know,” Mr Trump said.
“If I can help save the world from problems, I’m willing to do it. I’m willing to put myself out there. And we are, actually. We’re saving the world from a radical left philosophy that will destroy this country. And when this country is gone, the rest of the world would follow.
“And when you look at some of the things these people are saying, with defund the police, and no borders, open borders, everybody just pour right into our country, no testing, no nothing – you know, you talk about testing. No testing. Mexico, as you know, has a very high rate of infection. The wall is now, next week, going to be 300 miles long. Our numbers are extraordinary on the border. And this is through luck, perhaps, more than talent, although the talent is getting it built when one party chooses not to allow it. You don’t hear talk about the wall anymore.
“But I will say this. We need strength in our country, not weakness. Too much weakness.”
